Cafe Bar Jazz Nights to kick off 2020

Theatre Royal Winchester is looking forward to the roaring 20s again, with a host of intimate jazz nights, which will see talented singers and musicians performing in the venue’s stylish new Cafe Bar.

The first event, which takes place on Thursday 16 January, will see Jon Shenoy and Sam Dunn, a clarinet and guitar duo, playing hits from the American Songbook. Jon has repeatedly sold out shows at London’s Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, while Sam has performed at the Royal Albert Hall.

The next, on Thursday 30 January, will see pianist Ray d’Inverno joined by professional double bass player, Pete Maxfield. Formerly, Ray ran Southampton Jazz Club, has played with most of the UK’s leading jazz musicians, and released thirty albums; Pete has toured the world extensively, appearing at world-renowned venues, festivals, on TV and radio, and recorded three award-winning albums.

On Tuesday 11 February fans of local vintage vocal harmony group, The Spitfire Sisters, will know singer Louisa Revolta, who will celebrate the release of new album, ‘A Century of Ella Fitzgerald’ with hits from the beloved jazz singer. This show was last performed, to a sellout audience, at the 2017 Winchester Jazz Festival. Louisa will be joined by pianist Steve Christie and bassist Pete Maxfield.

On Friday 6 March jazz singer/songwriter Marvin Muoneké – who dubs himself ‘The Young Man with The Old Soul’ – will perform. Heavily influenced by the likes of Nat ‘King’ Cole, Frank Sinatra, Billy Eckstine et al, Marvin more recently appeared as a semi-finalist on ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent.

Finally, on Tuesday 7 April the Charlie Pyne Quartet, made up of double bassist, vocalist and composer Charlie Pyne, Luke Pinkstone (tenor, soprano sax), Liam Dunachie (piano) and Katie Patterson (drums), will perform contemporary melodic jazz, infused with pop and world music.

Presented in conjunction with Winchester Jazz Festival, all events will take place at 7pm.

Tickets are £10 and available from the Box Office or on the theatre’s website, where more information about each act can also be found, on the Cafe Bar page.
