World Book Day - 5th of March
World Book Day is a registered charity which aims to give every child and young person a book of their own.
This year, the 23rd worldwide annual World Book Day celebrations will take place on the 5th March and will see children, teachers and parents from over 100 countries come together to appreciate reading.
Although the main aim of the celebrations is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading, World Book Day is a day where people of all ages have all come to know and love. Over the years, we have seen parents, grandparents, guardians and friends piece together magnificent (some not so much) costumes of their child’s favourite book character. Undoubtedly though, this day may fill some parents with the slight dread, with the thought of scrambling a presentable costume together looming over us into the early hours of the night before the big day.
In today’s world, people are often consumed with technology that we forget how many benefits reading books can have for everyone. This month, the team at TDG are encouraging as many people as possible to reignite the reading flames inside us all! To do so here is a list of 5 benefits reading has below:
1. Knowledge:
Although seemly obvious, people tend to forget the fact that reading builds knowledge, something that will make you better equipped to face everyday situations.
2. Entertainment:
Reading isn’t just about learning; it’s about enjoyment too! Finding a book, author or genre you like and reading at your own pace is a brilliant low-budget way to keep you and your family entertained.
3. Expansion of Vocabulary:
Think of it as a reading life cycle; the more you read, the more words you are exposed to and the more likely you will be worked into your vocabulary.
4. Stress reduction:
Reading a novel can transport people into other realms of reality, causing a distraction from real life and allowing time for you to relax.
5. Improved concentration:
In this crazy, fast-paced world, our attention is often drawn in a million different directions. Reading can help you focus your attention on one story, allowing everything else to drift away and give your mind time to breathe.
Thousands of supermarkets and book shops take part in World Book Day; you can find your local participating Bookseller by visiting www.worldbookday.com and make sure to follow #WorldBookDay on social media to see how the rest of the world is celebrating!
