Hayling RNLI Lifeboat Station calls on all to stay safe

With the lockdown rules being relaxed to enable sailors and swimmers to use the beaches and Chichester Harbour, we hope all users follow the Government guidelines

We are used to facing dangers but a very different danger at this time in the form of a silent killer – Covid-19 threatens all of us. Lockdown has been eased and we can expect and welcome the leisure boating use of the harbour and local beaches, but this presents the RNLI with a challenge. Although our volunteer lifeboat crews are fully operational, should they be needed, it is important that anyone visiting the coast understands the risk and takes the necessary steps to keep themselves safe. This will also help to reduce the demands placed on our lifeboat crews and other emergency services including HM Coastguard. In this way we can all work together to succeed in ensuring the coast is a safe place to visit.

We would urge anyone planning a visit to the coast to follow this RNLI safety advice:-

Have a plan - check the weather forecast and tide times. Ensure your boats/equipment are in tip top condition If you fall into the water unexpectedly, FLOAT TO LIVE. Fight your instinct to thrash around, lean back, extend your arms and legs, and oat.

In any coastal emergency dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard. Please don’t go if the weather and conditions are a challenge.
