LGBT History Month 2022
LGBT History Month is an annual month-long observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history and celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender achievements. These accomplishments are often unacknowledged by the educational system. Therefore, companies and organisations should educate their members and employees during LGBT History Month.
It takes place from the 1st to the 28th of February each year.
February is a very important month in LGBT history. It was chosen for LGBT History Month to coincide with the abolition of Section 28 in 2003, which was the prohibition of the "promotion" of homosexuality.
LGBT History Month was founded in 1994 by Missouri high-school history teacher Rodney Wilson. It recognises the ongoing struggles faced by the LGBTQ+ community and also the events that have impacted society today - especially the Stonewall Riots. These were a series of demonstrations by members of the LGBT community in response to a police raid, which began on June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn, in New York.
The achievements of the LGBTQ+ community are often overlooked, particularly in schools. Therefore, LGBT History Month aims to recognise the community's sacrifices, which led to historical milestones such as the decriminalisation of homosexuality in 1967.
Schools OUT UK – The LGBT+ Education Charity is the founder of LGBT+ History Month UK in the UK. It started in 2015.
There are several reasons why LGBT History Month is important:
Many people across the world still live without rights
it is essential to learn about LGBTQ+ figures and historical events
Encourage inclusivity, diversity, and understanding in the workplace
Remember how far we have come to fight for equality in the community throughout the world
To provide a better and safer place for LGBT+ communities.
